Hands-On
Management Programme
The
UMD Professional Hands-on Management Programme is a unique workshop
series for dentists which has won acclaim around the country and
was nominated for a National Training Award in 2002. Established
eight years ago, this innovative programme is a comprehensive and intensive business management series for dentists. Completion
of this programme will prepare the practice for successful assessment
against the Investors in People standard.
The
Hands-On workshops use a phantom practice as the basis for the course (similar to a phantom head being used in a Hands-on clinical course) and are designed to help dentists to develop a more effective
business by introducing and exploring in depth the major business
principles behind successful practice. The principal benefits reported
by dentists who have completed the programme are:
1.
Improved profitability.
2. A greater sense of direction for the dental practice.
3. Enhanced job satisfaction for the whole team.
4. A much greater sense of business control for the Principal or
Partners.
The course comprises six Friday/Saturday workshops over six months, preceded by a practice survey by one of our consultants and with consultancy assistance between the workshops. The course is supported by an extensive reference manual for use in the practice.
The
Hands-on course covers business strategy, recruitment and selection, people management, performance management and appraisals, understanding finance,
marketing, strategic forecasting and leadership. Delegates on the
course try out management concepts and ideas through the use
of an extended case study of a dental practice which they 'purchase'
and 'manage' - and see the results of their management decisions. Between each workshop, delegates use management assignments
to implement in their own practices what they have learnt and tried
out on each workshop.
The
Hands-on Management Programme meets the criteria laid down by
the GDC for verifiable CPD, and provides 70.5 hours of verifiable
CPD.
New courses start in September 2006 in Newcastle, Cambridge, Cardiff and Leeds, with others planned for later in the year.
